I just thought of another film and character that can be used to show this education + ethnic= white trope and that's Vanessa Williams' character in Soul Food.Anonymoushttps://www.blogger.com/profile/06427801612070277923noreply@blogger.comtag:blogger.com,1999:blog-8615688640163908524.post-74181713325743066852011-04-13T20:07:20.792-07:002011-04-13T20:07:20.792-07:00Thanks Aja for this post! My mother's family only ever spoke Spanish to me, but I always answered in English. My mother never encouraged me to learn Spanish because it was also beaten out of her in school. So these questions of language and their relationship to identity intrigue me. Thanks for the analysis of the education + ethnic = white trope in the texts you mention. This can be a powerful concept to help students deconstruct these images in media and help them articulate their educational goals. Below is a link to Michael Oatman's essay, "Admittance to a Better" life which examines being "educated away from your own past" as he puts it. Thankfully, the work that you, Cruz, and other are doing are help us all realize that we don't have to "sell out" to be educated, but that we can enrich the academy and our students by bringing our past with us.

I hope your C's was great. I was unable to attend your Saturday session on codemeshing, but I will definitely look for the collection when it publishes!

http://www.npr.org/templates/story/story.php?storyId=10853582

Carla Maroudas
Mt.
